Case Study on Search Engine Bias

Project type

Media Analysis

Date

November 2023

Location

Seattle

This is a group project based on the book Algorithms of Oppression. We looked at how search engines like Google can make racial and gender bias worse, especially against Black women. I explained what happens when people search “Black girls” on Google — many results are sexual or offensive. This happens because the algorithm learns from biased content online, and most tech designers don’t come from diverse backgrounds. I talked about why this is a problem, how it started, and what we can do to make technology more fair. This also connects to what we learned in class — that algorithms are not neutral, and they reflect real-world bias.
